PURGATION OF NIKE October 20-30, 2009 Performance will take place one night only: October 20th, 630-7PM October 7, 2009, New York City The Lab (for Installation and Performance Art) is pleased to announce the upcoming performance installation by Robert C. Morgan titled The Purgation of Nike (1974-1984/2009). The piece is based on a 1984 professional studio recording of Morgans voice slowed down while reading excerpts from an old swim manual published in the late 1930s. The sound resembles a Tantric Buddhist chant and is the source that inspired the work. The space of the gallery will be painted black, with a red glow in one corner and a large sand circle in the center. There will be a steaming pot of water to one side, placed on an electric coil, lit with a halogen light. A rotating sequence of 20 digital images of the artists hands (photographed in 1974) will be looped on two small monitors in the corner, and a large painting (1984) of a colossal leg will rest against the adjacent wall, also lit by halogen. The 20-minute performance will take place Tuesday October 20, 2009 at 630PM and will involve the sound of the tape as Morgan marks the sand through a series of circular movements that constitute ideographic signs. Fred Millett, director of sales and marketing for Pleotint, West Olive, Mich., demonstrated the company’s Sunlight Responsive Thermochromic glass during Greenbuild. The glass passively tints when there is direct sunlight, allowing about 60 percent visible light transmittance in its clear state and about 10 percent transmittance in its fully tinted state. The technology works through a thermochromic film that warms when hit with direct sunlight, darkening and effectively tinting the glass. During Greenbuild, Pleotint used a halogen light to simulate direct sunlight.
